Police department starts gang hotline

POSTED November 20, 2009 6:44 p.m.
With the hopes of curbing gang activity in and around the city, the Modesto Police Department has established a new gang hotline.
“From the gang injunction to increased law enforcement sweeps to the new gang hotline, I am pleased that the entire community — government agencies and individual community members — is taking a stand to improve safety in our neighborhoods,” said Vice Mayor Kristin Olsen.
A Modesto resident suggested the hotline idea to Olsen over the summer when Modesto was experiencing an increase in gang violence, including several fatal shootings.
Investigators believe the hotline will give citizens a safe avenue to report gang activity, rumors of impending gang violence, and tips about previous criminal gang activity without the fear of retaliation. Callers can remain anonymous, however, they are encouraged to leave detailed information including about the location of occurrence and the people involved.  Investigators will honor requests for anonymity, said Modesto Police Sgt. Brian Findlen.
The 24-hour hotline number is 524-7491. Information provided via the hotline will be investigated by the Modesto Police Department Gang Investigations Unit. Substantial tips leading to the arrest of individuals responsible for violent crimes may be referred to Crime Stoppers for reward consideration.
