Jones, Demery win Stanislaus Outstanding Athlete Awards

POSTED May 17, 2013 8:07 p.m.

Karenee Demery and Reggie Jones were honored Wednesday night by The Sportsmen of Stanislaus as they were named the top female and male athletes at the annual Outstanding Athlete Awards.
Demery received the award as the top female athlete in the open division, which includes collegiate athletes who either is from or competed in Stanislaus County. In 2012, She matched her school record with 19 goals and totaled 41 points to again lead the Warriors to the California Collegiate Athletic Association championship tournament. She was named to the All-American team and was the CCAA's most valuable offensive player for a second time. Additionally, Demery was the program's first Academic All-American.
Demery wasn't able to attend the event because she is in Chula Vista training with the U.S. U23 National Team. Warriors head coach Gabriel Bolton accepted the award on her behalf.
A year after completing his eligibility, Jones continues to receive recognition as one of the best collegiate basketball players. Jones, who last played during the 2011-12 season, led the team with 19.1 points per game, 6.9 rebounds per game and shot 53.8 percent as a senior in 2011-12. He went on to play in the Division II All-Star game and was a NABC Division II All-American - the first Stanislaus men's player to earn both honors.
Jones is currently home in the Bay Area after playing professionally in Slovakia.
Baseball standout Eli Davis was also a finalist in the men's open division. Davis batted .399 with eight home runs and 49 RBIs and was named to the All-CCAA team and third-team Division II All-America honors. The graduate of MJC and Turlock Christian was the third Stanislaus player to be recognized as an All-American.
Demery and Jones join a list of past Cal State Stanislaus student-athletes who have won the SOS Outstanding Athlete Awards, including recent recipients Chaunte Mitchell, Breanna Vaughn and Ryan Thornberry. This is also the second time that both open division winners are from Cal State Stanislaus.
The Outstanding Athlete Awards program, now in its 46th year, was created to honor talented local students and adult athletes, as well as individuals who have contributed to athletics in Stanislaus County.
