Illegal fireworks light up Turlock skies

TFD assists Modesto with holiday blazes

POSTED July 9, 2013 4:03 p.m.

No major fires flared up in Turlock over the Fourth of July holiday, but Turlock fire fighters were kept busy responding to multiple reports of illegal fireworks being used in the city.

The Turlock Fire Department also was called to assist both the Modesto Fire Department and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department when two separate blazes began to grow and spread.

The fire department responded to 16 reports of illegal fireworks from callers providing specific locations. They also issued 27 “be on the lookout” for illegal fireworks being used without a specific location reported. The call numbers were just for the Fourth of July and ended at midnight.

The Turlock Police Department responded to 23 firework related calls on the Fourth of July. No citations were issued for the night and no arrests were made in connection to firework usage.

In between searching for those using illegal fireworks, the fire department put out two rubbish fires, one fence fire, one grass fire and one stove fire during the night.

“There were no major fires over the holiday,” Turlock Fire Chief Tim Lohman said. “We were pretty fortunate here in Turlock.”

While the holiday was relatively calm in Turlock, it proved to be a busy night for Modesto fire fighters. Modesto saw 16 vegetation fires and one structure fire that damaged two houses. The day also saw three fire fighters sent to area hospitals — one with an eye injury and two for heat-related injuries. All three have been treated and released.
