Turlock Unified School District Superintendent Sonny Da Marto was named one of five finalists for the 2013 National Superintendent of the Year award by the National Association of School Superintendents.

Although he didn't earn the top award, Da Marto was the only superintendent representing the state of California.

“I’m humbled,” said Da Marto. “To be selected as the only finalist for California and to be recognized for the work that you do is amazing.”

Da Marto has over 35 years experience in the education field. Since coming to TUSD in 2008, he has made quite an impact including launching the district’s education foundation, creating a district music and arts festival and developing energy efficient schools.

He also served as a president of the Association of California School Administrators, the largest organization for school leaders in the nation.

According to NAAS Chairperson Patricia Beaver, Da Marto is a widely respected educational leader who always puts students first.

“Da Marto is one of California’s foremost educational leaders grounded in a record for success,” said Beaver.

Under Da Marto’s leadership, all 16 of the district’s schools have improved on their state test results. During challenging fiscal times, Da Marto also successfully orchestrated employee negotiations and maintained a great number of financial reserves.

NASS Executive Director Dr. Theresa Daem said that Da Marto represents what educational leaders need to be today.

“It is clear that our country’s educational system faces tremendous challenges and is in need of dynamic and continuously improving leadership,” said Daem.  “We are very proud to have him as an active member, and we are anticipating many valuable contributions to the profession.”

Dr. Don Haddad from Longmont, Colo. was named 2013 Superintendent of the Year this week.
