Freedom writer comes to Valley

POSTED July 23, 2013 10:06 p.m.

Manuel Scott, an original freedom writer whose story is told in a 2007 Hollywood film, is coming to Modesto to share his story of struggle and success to inspire the youth.

Scott will kick-off the school year with a free lecture from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Aug. 7 at the Modesto High School Auditorium. Stanislaus County Superintendent of Schools Tom Changnon is encouraging all county teachers to attend the event.

“This event is an opportunity for revitalization and a chance to remember the zeal that first put you on a course to working with children,” said Changnon.

Millions of Americans witnessed Scott’s struggles with gangs and drugs through his character “Marcus” in the hit MTV movie, “Freedom Writers.”

After graduating from high school, Scott obtained a PhD and now travels the country speaking to educators, parents and community leaders.

“Life at its best is about making others make the most out of their lives,” said Scott. “My life was changed because others took the time to let me know they care, and I believe it is my duties to love and serve others in the same way, helping people turn the page in their lives from despair to hope and from mediocrity to excellence.”

The event is free and open to all community members. Modesto High School is located at 18 H St.
