A 50-year-old woman had her life saved by a group of park-goers who subdued her ex-boyfriend after he slit her throat at Turlock’s Donnelly Park Monday night.

The woman sustained serious, but non-life threatening injuries from the attack and has been released from the hospital, the Turlock Police Department reported.

The ex-boyfriend, identified as Dan Rigney, 52, of Turlock has been charged with attempted homicide, domestic battery and making criminal threats, said Turlock Police Sgt. Stephen Webb.

The victim and Rigney had recently ended their relationship with one another, Webb said.

The victim was at Donnelly Park around 6:30 p.m. Monday to meet with Rigney and exchange their personal belongings.

Rigney grabbed the woman and allegedly told her he was going to kill her as he slid his knife across her throat. It’s not known what type of knife the suspect used.

The woman’s screams alerted several people to the attack and two to three rushed to her aid, said Turlock Police spokesperson Officer Mayra Lewis.

The individuals were able to detain Rigney until police arrived and took him into custody.

Rigney was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail and is being held in lieu of a $500,000 bail. He has an arraignment scheduled for today.

In the last month the Turlock Police Department has taken reports at Donnelly Park for auto burglary, larceny, narcotics, robbery, arson, and a juvenile issue. Additionally, a woman was kidnapped and attacked by a 17-year-old boy while jogging in the park.

This was not the first occasion that a meeting between a one-time couple turned violent. In 2007, James Haberkam Sr. shot his former girlfriend in the chest during a meeting at Donnelly Park and sparked a six-hour stand-off with law enforcement.

Donnelly Park is slated to become the new home of the Brandon Koch Memorial Skate Park.
