Hash lab burns home

Charles Khio

POSTED August 16, 2013 9:56 p.m.

A Turlock man is facing multiple criminal charges after setting his kitchen on fire while making hashish.

The man, identified as Charles Khio, 29, was arrested by Turlock Police officers on suspicion of felony hashish oil extraction, possession of marijuana and violation of probation.

The fire was reported at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 100 block of Hedstrom Road. Khio reported the fire started when a pan on the stove ignited a kitchen towel put too close to the fire. According to the report from the Turlock Fire Department, Khio tried to put the flames out with a blanket and a pillow, before running from the home.

Firefighters were able to contain the flames to the kitchen and had the fire extinguished within 22 minutes of their arrival. Three fire engines and nine firefighters were at the scene.

The Turlock Police Department was called to the scene after firefighters found evidence the kitchen was being used as a hashish oil extraction lab — a process which can involve flammable solvents.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The damage to the rental home was estimated at $6,000 according to the fire department.
