Ice rink gets final approval from county

POSTED August 20, 2013 9:32 p.m.

It’s official, Turlock is getting it’s very own ice rink.

Last Thursday, the Stanislaus County Planning Commission cleared owner of R.A.M farms and director of the Turlock Irrigation District, Ron Macedo, to operate a seasonal produce stand, pumpkin patch and Christmas tree lot complete with a lighted 60 by 80 foot ice skating rink.

Thursday's approval will make the new rink the first of its kind in the area.

“We’re ecstatic about this,” said Macedo. “This, along with the pumpkin patch and Christmas trees are going to provide the community with old fashioned wholesome fun.”

The approved ice rink is expected to open the day after Thanksgiving and end the second weekend of January and will be located 716 N. Daubenberger Rd., where Macedo owns and operates his current farm and pumpkin patch.

According to Macedo, the ice rink will essentially come in a series of mats and require constant refrigeration.

Macedo stated that although the cost of the temporary rink was high, he is hopeful that the community will come out and support the venture.

“I’m kind of rolling the dice on this one,” said Macedo.”But I’m confident that the community will come out and help us.”

Macedo also expressed enthusiasm about the Christmas tree lot. According to Macedo, a percentage of each purchase will go to charitable causes.

Loveleen Johal, a Turlock resident who previously traveled up to San Francisco to skate, said that along with being something for youth to do for the community it might also spark interest in ice related sports as whole.

“It’s a great thing, and is going to add a lot to our community,” said Johal. “It might even make kids more interested in hockey and ice skating.”

Johal also added some other possible benefits of the new rink.

“It’s also so romantic for ice skating dates,” she said.

The hours of the lighted ice rink will be noon to 8 p.m. on weekdays, and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends, with sessions every two hours.
