Carnegie to stage poetry readings

POSTED August 20, 2013 9:34 p.m.

The Carnegie Arts Center will be playing host to quarterly poetry readings from the Modesto-Stanislaus Poetry Center starting Sunday.

The first session at the Carnegie, set for 2 p.m. Sunday, will feature 15-minute readings from Turlock poets Ann W. Bailey and Gary Thomas and Modesto poets Lynn Hansen and Tom Myers.

After the readings the Carnegie will host an open mic for budding poets that will last for about an hour.

The Modesto-Stanislaus Poetry Center works to promote poetry in the community by providing poets venues for readings and issuing collected anthologies from local poets.

“This is a start of a new collaboration that will make poetry more accessible in Turlock,” said Lisa McDermott, the assistant director at the Carnegie. “We felt like it was a great partnership opportunity.”

Future poetry readings at the Carnegie are set for Nov. 14, Feb. 23, 2014, and May 25, 2014. All the featured poets have been selected.

Collections of some of Sunday’s featured poets’ works will be available for purchase at the reading.
