Blaze burns high school wing

POSTED December 4, 2009 11:41 p.m.
A fire that started in a wood shop storage area spread rapidly and destroyed a science wing at Dos Palos High School Thursday afternoon.
The inferno laid waste to two wings on the high school campus, leaving the ag science, wood shop and auto shop classrooms a pile of rubble and ash.
All of the 750 students and staff were safely evacuated from the fire area and no injuries were reported.
According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the fire started shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday while the campus was on lunch break.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Capt. Ryan Williams estimated the damage caused by the blaze to be between $5 million and $10 million.
A total of 63 firefighters, nine engines, and two water tenders from three counties and four cities responded to the fire call. A few crews remained through nightfall to put out hot spots.
