A local family is seeking donations after their 18-year-old son, Corbin Maldonado, passed away last week following a four year battle with leukemia.

Diagnosed with leukemia in 2009, at the age of 14, Maldonado spent months in and out of the hospital while undergoing chemotherapy through July 2010. After being placed on a maintenance program, Maldonado was re-diagnosed with the disease in late December 2012.

On May 1, Maldonado received a bone marrow transplant which caused several complications, leading to him being admitted to the intensive care unit at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford in Palo Alto, where he stayed until passing away last week.

Due to the length of stay in Palo Alto, a trust fund titled “Team Corbin” has been put together by friends and family of Maldonado to help offset the cost of the stay for the family.

“I think what we don’t realize sometimes is when people who have these long hospital visits are having to support two households, how hard it can be financially,” said Erin Nelson, a friend of the Maldonado family and current director at Emanuel Medical Center’s Jessica’s House.

The Team Corbin trust fund will not only go towards helping the Maldonado family, but also to help other local families who are facing illnesses with their own children. As of last week, the Team Corbin trust fund has received $4,765 in donations from the community.

“The family does have a desire to keep the fund open so that they can help out other families who face the challenges of having a sick child,” said Nelson. “It’s very important to them to pay it forward to help others in similar situations.”

For those who wish to support the Maldonado family, and help other families dealing with child illness, donations can be made at F&M Bank located at 121 S. Center St. in Turlock, or online at http://www.gofundme.com/455ri8
