Eagles earn experience in win over Coyotes

Turlock Christian High claimed its second league victory on Wednesday with a straight set victory (25-17, 25-10, 25-9) over its Monte Vista counterpart Denair High.

The Eagles — fresh off a 4-1 performance at the Carmichael Invitational Volleyball Tournament and a crushing five-set loss to Mariposa County High — dispatched the Coyotes without the help of their best player Sarah Amaral. Instead, TC called in “the others” off the bench to take care of business.

“We wanted to give the others a chance to get some playing time,” TC head coach Ken Wynne said. “They really started to put it all together as the night went on and the score shows that.”

Sophomores Mikayla Yagi — Amaral’s replacement — and Abbie Morelli were effective on the court despite not having much experience on the season. Junior Morgan Beard also played well as she stood with teammates Tiffany Franco, Anna Larson, and Samantia Fabila.

“It builds confidence in some of the first year varsity players,” Wynne said. “I think it will help us later in the season if we have a starter that gets injured or isn’t performing well.”

The Coyotes, who were coming off their first league win of the season against Gustine High, provided good competition for the Eagles in the first set as its defense did a good job keeping the ball in play. Aleigha Ibarra was instrumental in the defensive stand, as was Katie Oliver.

“Their defense is really good, they took everything we threw at them,” Wynne said.

Ibarra finished with 14 digs and 2 kills.

Larson finished with 7 kills, Fabila notched 6 aces and 3 digs, Franco blocked 27 shots, and Yagi came up with 3 digs.

Both teams will be at home at 6 p.m. Monday as TC hosts Delhi High and Denair hosts Waterford High.

“We’re going to try and rest Sarah again and give the others a chance to play and build more confidence,” Wynne said.
