New York company brings Shakespeare tragedy to stage

The Acting Company of New York is staging “Hamlet” at the Gallo Center for the Arts.

POSTED October 10, 2013 4:06 p.m.

The Acting Company of New York will return to the Gallo Center for the Arts with William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" at 4 pm. Sunday.

The company last visited the Gallo Center in 2012 with "Of Mice and Men," performing before a capacity audience.

"It is an honor to have The Acting Company back," said Gallo Center CEO Lynn Dickerson. "The amazing actors and the very high production values are just thrilling to experience."

This will be the first staging of “Hamlet” in The Acting Company’s 40-year history.  Produced in association with the Guthrie Theater of Minneapolis, the production vividly dramatizes the revenge Prince Hamlet exacts for his father’s murder, setting him on a journey seeking his personal mortality while exploring themes of danger, revenge and moral corruption. “Hamlet” was one of Shakespeare’s most popular works during his lifetime and still ranks among his most-performed.
Founded in 1972 by the late producer-director-actor John Houseman and current producing director Margot Harley with members of the first graduating class of the Juilliard School’s Drama Division, The Acting Company has performed 137 productions for over 3 million people in 48 states and ten foreign countries. Alumni members include Kevin Kline, Rainn Wilson, Patti LuPone, David Schramm, Jesse L. Martin, David Ogden Stiers, Frances Conroy, Jeffrey Wright, Harriet Harris, Hamish Linklater and Keith David.

Tickets for "Hamlet" are $25, $30 and $40, and may be purchased at, by calling 338-2100, or from the Gallo Center ticket office, 1000 I Street in downtown Modesto.
