A select group of artists will have their works displayed alongside the ceramic creations of Pablo Picasso as the Carnegie Arts Center unveils their “Imagining the Real” exhibit.

“Imagining the Real” runs concurrently with “Picasso: 25 Years of Edition Ceramicsnow on view at the Carnegie. It offers visitors the unique perspectives of artists from the community and beyond.

The exhibit title borrows from a quote by Pablo Picasso. “All that you can imagine is real,” he said.

Featuring 56 works, this juried exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, works on paper, textiles, photographs, and mixed media works by artists representing numerous communities. More than 215 entries were received, including 22 from Turlock and 20 from Modesto.

“We were seeking entries that had a clear start in the imagination of the artist,” says Rebecca Phillips Abbott, director and curator, “But it was up to each individual artist to interpret that as he or she saw fit.”

Winners of the competition include Josef Peters of Escalon, who received the grand prize for his sculpture, “Bare Youth, 2013.”

“His sculpture seems to defy death in its liveliness and is composed of steel, rubber tire & an I-beam,” Phillips said.

Claudia Silva-Doo of Turlock received First Prize in Mixed Media for her intricately patterned “Bamboo Curtain, 2013.”

Other first prize winners include: Yvonne Porcella; Gioia Fonda; Gail C Ritchie; Morgan Chivers; and Mark Adam Webster.

An artists’ reception is planned for 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. tonight at the Carnegie Arts Center at 250 N. Broadway. It is open to the public and free of charge.

The exhibits will be on display through Feb. 23, 2014.
