Delhi crash victim identified

POSTED October 26, 2013 12:03 a.m.

The identity of the teenager killed in a collision on Interstate 5 Thursday morning near Woodland has been identified.

The Yolo County Coroner’s office identified the deceased as Alejandro Galvan Torres, 13, of Delhi.

Torres was killed when the Toyota Corolla he was a passenger in veered off the interstate and down an embankment and into a tree.

There were three people in the Toyota Corolla — Torres, his father Galvan Audel, 39, of Delhi and his cousin, Sergio Gomez Sandoval, 18, of Turlock, the California Highway patrol reported.

The trio was returning from Washington and had been driving straight through the night. The cousin, Sandoval, took over driving around midnight in Yreka. As he drove southbound on the interstate, he reportedly fell asleep, allowing the vehicle to drift off the interstate, down an embankment and striking a tree.

Torres was sleeping in the back seat of the Toyota Corolla and was wearing only a lap belt. He was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, according to the CHP.

Audel and Sandoval both sustained minor abrasions.

Alcohol and drugs were not considered a factor in the collision.
