Turlock tennis ends season at SJS Singles Tournament

It was an early exit for the three Turlock High Bulldogs involved in Thursday’s Division I Sac-Joaquin Section Singles Tournament as reigning Central California Conference singles champion Jillian Temple was eliminated in the first round and reigning CCC doubles champions Maddy Hillis and Lauren Carlson were eliminated in the second round.

“I’m very happy with the way the season finished,” Turlock head coach Linda Bejeran said. “It’s a nice way to end the year, to get to go up there and the girls get to play some of the best players.”

Temple ran into trouble early when she was pitted against the number two seed, Madeline Alameda of the Delta River League. Though she played well, Temple was unable to overcome the seasoned tournament player and fell in straight sets, 0-6, 0-6.

“Madeline is a tournament player. She’s a USTA player and she’s ranked,” Bejeran said. “The girl was just more consistent.”

The team of Hillis and Carlson fared better in their first outing, dispatching the duo of Stagg High’s Claudette Caceres and Lynzie Vang in back-to-back 7-5 sets.

“They played aggressive at the net with a lot of confidence,” Bejeran said of her doubles team. “They communicated well with each other and they were relaxed, and I think that was the difference.”

Hillis and Carlson had a tougher time in the second round, however, where they were matched against the third seeded team of Ashley Isaac and Elena Topete of Del Oro High and ultimately lost in straight sets, 1-6, 2-6.

“They felt real good when they came off the court. They gave it their all; they just played a real good doubles team,” Bejeran said.

Thursday marked the end of Temple’s and Hillis’ tennis careers with Turlock as they will be graduating at the end of the school year while Carlson will return in 2014 for her senior year.
