Turlock men could face death penalty for fatal shooting

POSTED November 8, 2013 6:10 p.m.

The Two Turlock men accused of killing a 21-year-old man made an initial court appearance Friday and learned they could be facing the death penalty.

Pardeep Singh, 21, and Kultar Singh Dhatt, 22, were scheduled for an arraignment Friday but it was postponed until Nov. 21, giving them more time to arrange for legal representation.

The two men were arrested Wednesday night by Turlock Police investigators for the death of 21-year-old Amritpal Sandhu of Modesto.

At 1:25 a.m. Wednesday the California Highway Patrol received an emergency call from Sandhu. He stated he was being shot at as he drove southbound on Highway 99, near Taylor Road. About a minute later the TPD received calls of shots fired in the area of E. Canal Drive.

Officers responding to the area found Sandhu dead in his car near Minaret Avenue and Main Street. He had been shot at least three times, according to the police department.

Singh and Dhatt have both been charged with murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle, and making criminal threats. Singh is also charged with assault with a firearm.

The Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office contends that because the men were firing from one vehicle into another with an intent to kill, their charges against them include special circumstances, which makes them eligible for the death penalty. The district attorney’s office has not made a determination on whether or not to seek the death penalty.
