Three move on to CC Sections

POSTED November 12, 2013 7:32 p.m.

One Pride runner and two Bulldogs will move on to Sections, after each individual runner had a good showing at the Sac-Joaquin Sub Section cross country meet last weekend at Angels Camp.

Pitman High’s Isaac Gonzalez placed fifth in the Division-II individuals and will be moving on to Sections in Folsom on Saturday.

“Isaac’s season is a testament to hard work and intrinsic motivation,” Pitman head coach Sara Smith said.

Gonzalez was able to finish a tough race, in a course that he was unfamiliar with, at a time of 17:11. No other varsity runners from Pitman will move on to Sections.

“After he was unable to attend Sub Sections last year, Isaac showed pure determination and work ethic to achieve his personal goals this year. Coach Clemens and I are very proud of him,” Smith said.

For the Bulldog boys’ Rex Doo finished atop the team with a time of 17:50, while junior Javier Lara was able to finish just behind (18:15). Nicolas Lopez took the third best time for the ‘Dogs with an 18:59. Erik Sousa  finished the day with a time of 19:08.

Doo and Lara qualified for next week’s Division-I final at Folsom High School.

“Being that this race is held in the hills of Calaveras, valley schools are at a distinct disadvantage,” Turlock head coach JoAnn Davison said. “What it revealed was the ferocity of these kids in competition.”

The Turlock girls surprise of the day was Raveena Samra, who topped out for the Bulldogs with a time of 22:06, with Brook Lowery tailing her at 22:58. Jocelyne Montes was able to finish third best for the Bulldogs girls with a time of 23:51.

“What an amazing day at Angels Camp,” Davison said. “It was a tough race without three of our normal top seven, but every one of those girls stepped up and ran their best race of the season.  Amanda Medina and Savannah Miranda came through.”

Medina was able to finish fourth best for the ‘Dogs with a time of 23:56. Miranda placed sixth on the team at 24:59.

“Sports doesn't build character as much as it reveals it.  This 2013 team personifies that statement,” Davison said. “This is a particularly tough, hard working, team-oriented group that puts the needs of the team before all else.  There have been many times in this season when coach Ebersole and I have been staggered by their resilience and grit.”
