Warriors open with victory over Cal Maritime

POSTED November 16, 2013 12:10 a.m.

This one counts for Riley Holladay. In just 22 minutes of play, the freshman from Reno scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Cal State Stanislaus over Cal Maritime, 74-55, in the Warriors' regular season opener Thursday night.
Holladay scored 11 of her total in the first half, and at times with dazzling drives and nothing-but-net three-pointers. She ended up with 8-for-11 on the field and made both of her three-point tries.
Lauren Godde scored 10 points while Jasmine Washington and Briana Cotton each added nine points for the Warriors. The Warriors also out-rebounded Cal Maritime 59-36. Madelyn Birchall pulled eight boards including five offensive rebounds. Erin Godde also had seven rebounds.
"The keys for us are rebounding and having good defensive pressure without fouling the opponents. We did a good job today, we out-rebounded them 59-36, which is a good margin," said head coach Wayman Strickland. "We need  to do a little bit better job taking care of the ball and running through all our offensive sets."
Washington also contributed on defense with four steals, a block-shot and five defensive rebounds.
Holladay scored 17 last week at Pacific but the stats do not count because it was an exhibition contest.
The Warriors only had by three halfway through the first half after a three-pointer by CMA's Gabby Davis. But an 8-3 Stanislaus run gave the Warriors an 8-point lead.
Stanislaus' biggest lead in the first half was 11 on a Holladay three-pointer at 4:29 for a 32-21 advantage. The Warriors' largest lead before the final count was 17 at 5:36 left to go when Birchall made a steal and finished the layup for a 62-45 score.
Despite making just 3 of 15 tries on three-pointers the Warriors made up for it on the foul line, converting on 15 of 22 attempts.
"The process has started. We will get better from day to day. I am very happy with getting our first home win," Strickland added.
Cal Maritime (3-3) was led by Javier Brantely with 11 points. Sarah Guerrero had 10. The Keelhaulers beat Sonoma State, 57-47, on Tuesday.
