Drunk driver injures expectant mother, child and pedestrian

POSTED November 19, 2013 9:46 p.m.

A pregnant woman, her 11-month-old daughter and a 29-year-old man were all injured Saturday afternoon when a drunk driver hit their parked car while trying to flee from another hit and run.

All three were taken to the hospital with the 29-year-old suffering the worst injuries from being pinned between the vehicle and the sidewalk.

The suspected drunk driver was identified as 58-year-old Tomas Velazquez by the Turlock Police Department. He was arrested and charged with felony drunk driving, said Turlock Police spokesperson Officer Mayra Lewis.

Around 2:30 p.m. Saturday the Turlock Police Department received a report of a minivan hitting another vehicle in the area of N. Orange and W. Main streets and then leaving the area heading north on Orange Street.

As an officer was responding to that hit and run, another report came in of a minivan that had struck a parked car on Orange Street.

Velazquez drove his Chrysler minivan across the lane and hit a Toyota sedan that was parked on the opposite side of the street. The left front of the minivan hit the car head on, Lewis said.

The pregnant woman was inside the car and was taken to the hospital for a complaint of pain.

The 11-month-old girl was buckled into a car seat, but the car seat had not yet been attached to the back seat buckle. The impact of the collision caused the car seat to be ejected with the toddler still buckled into it. The child sustained scrapes and bruises and was taken to the hospital.

The 29-year-old man had been standing outside the car when it was struck and the impact caused his legs to be pinned between the Toyota and the sidewalk. He sustained major injuries, including multiple broken bones, Lewis said.

Velazquez was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail after being medically cleared.
