Senator Cannella seeks new law ideas

POSTED November 19, 2013 9:54 p.m.

Ever thought of something that you thought would make a good law? Or perhaps thought a law already existed for an issue, only to find out that there isn’t one? Well then write that thought down and send it over to Senator Anthony Cannella as he is holding a contest asking his constituents for new legislation ideas.

Last week, Senator Cannella (R-Ceres) announced his “There Ought to be a Law” contest, providing his constituents with the opportunity to present ideas for new bill proposals. After reviewing the applications, Cannella says that he will personally sponsor the legislation from winning submissions.

“Some of the best ideas we have for legislation have come from members of the community that see the need for a change,” said Cannella. “For example, this year we had a bill that came from a suggestion that ended up becoming the first in the nation to criminalize cyber revenge.”

By seeking new legislation ideas from his constituents, Cannella hopes to create an avenue for citizens to become part of the law-making process.

“This contest allows citizens to gain first-hand experience in the lawmaking process and improve California government,” said Cannella.

In the application, constituents are asked to address the problem that needs a legislative solution, what their solution includes, whether or not similar legislation has been introduced in California or other states, if the proposal would either save or cost the State money, and who might oppose or support the bill if chosen.

If selected, the winners will be personally invited by Cannella to testify in Sacramento at a hearing on their bill.

The deadline for submission is Dec. 20. Application forms can be found online at www.district12.cssrc.us and returned via email at Tyler.Munzing@sen.ca.gov or by mail to one of the District offices below:
