The Turlock Junior and Turlock High school bands are set to have a very unique lesson in music when Grammy nominated horn player Mic Gillette comes to town.

Gillette will be performing in a special fund raising concert with the Jazz Ensembles at both schools. The concert will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Turlock Junior High School Auditorium at 3951 N. Walnut Road.

Gillette, a trumpet and trombone player, was an original member and leader of the Tower of Power horn section. He turned his musical talent into a 40-plus years career that included stints with Tower of Power, Cold Blood, Sons of Champlin, and Blood, Sweat and Tears.

In addition to all his live shows, Gillette has recorded music with The Rolling Stones, Sheryl Crow, Doobie Brothers, Quincy Jones, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Jefferson Starship, Huey Lewis and the News, and numerous others.

Gillette continues to record and arrange music and play shows around the Northern California area. He is also focusing more on his “Music in the Schools” program, which helps to build up music education and the junior and high school levels.

“We’re really excited about his visit,” said Andrea Hawkes, a THS band booster and one of the event’s organizers.

The show will feature student performances, numbers with Gillette joining in and a few Gillette solos.

“They’ll do some combos and then he’ll stretch out and do his thing,” Hawkes said.

Tickets for the show are $5 and can be purchased in Turlock at Yonan’s Jewelers, Hendrickson’s Turlock Music, and the THS Activities Office. All profits will go to support the music programs at Turlock Junior High School and Turlock High School.
