Hate crime charges lodged against father and son

Victim suffered multiple injuries from attack outside Turlock bar

POSTED January 16, 2014 7:20 p.m.

The Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office has charged a father and son with battery and a hate crime stemming from a December attack outside a Turlock bar.

Eddie Taylor Sr., 53, and Eddie Taylor Jr., 25, were both charged with battery with serious bodily injury and assault likely to cause great bodily injury. The charges also carry a special allegation that the battery was carried out against the victim because of race, religion, gender, etc., according to court records.

The victim of the alleged attack is a black woman.

On Eddie Taylor Jr.’s Facebook page he lists an association with the Denair White Boys Inc., a reported street gang.

Eddie Taylor Sr. also has a prior offense for voluntary manslaughter from a Merced County conviction in 1980 that could be used against him in sentencing if he is convicted on the current charges, according to the criminal complaint filed by the district attorney’s office.

The arrest of the two men stems from an assault on Dec. 23 outside of Staley’s Club at 426 E. Main St.

The victim was in the bar and was stepping outside when one of the Taylors allegedly uttered a racial slur at her. According to the police report, the victim and both men were in a heated verbal exchange before the men were asked to leave the bar.

A short time after the men left, the victim stepped outside and was talking to a friend when she was punched upside the head. According to the police report she was hit and kicked repeatedly and had to be taken to a hospital for her injuries.

The two men reportedly left the area before law enforcement arrived, but a description of their vehicle was given and located a short distance away from the scene, said Turlock Police Lt. Miguel Pacheco.

The criminal complaint was filed against the father and son Tuesday. They have an arraignment scheduled for Jan. 23 in Stanislaus County Superior Court.
