TC rallies to defeat Denair

Turlock Christian’s Brady Turner goes for the basketball against Denair High on Friday.

POSTED January 17, 2014 10:48 p.m.

With league play resuming on Friday night, Turlock Christian and Denair clashed in a Southern Athletic League boys basketball bout.

The game was going Denair's way at first, but a sweltering third quarter hoisted the visiting Eagles of TC over the Coyotes in a 64-44 win.

“Denair played us tough, they hit some threes and they got great shooters we don’t want to take anything away from them, we just pulled away in the third quarter,” Turlock Christian head coach Eddie Sai said.

By the end of the second quarter, with a 29-20 score, things looked good for Denair as the Eagles were missing easy opportunities — but they quickly bounced back.

Last year’s first team all-leaguer Kameron Vogt did not play due to the flu, but the team was still able to produce offensively, Sai added.

Led by the tandem of Brady Turner and Jordan Riise—who both added double-doubles—the Eagles were able to contain the paint against a smaller Coyotes squad as they added 37 of the team’s points.

Denair failed to produce much offense in the third as they were outscored 23-8; and in the fourth things didn’t get much better.

“All respect to Denair and their head coach, they played really hard, we just ended up with the big scoring that made the big difference,” Sai said.

Along with a strong performance from the big guys, Josh Wright and Seth Retemeyer were able to play consistent as they managed the game with their smart play.

Retemeyer added on 11 points while Wright tacked on six points, nine assists, five steals and five boards. Four guys notched double figures, a good balance Sai said.

Riise topped out with 10 points and 11 boards while Turner brought down 16 boards and added 16 points for the game.

The TC Eagles will next play at Mariposa with a starting time of 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Next for the Denair Coyotes will be a SAL matchup at Gustine starting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
