Man escapes jail, ditches wedding

POSTED June 27, 2009 6:34 p.m.
Manuel Guzman was given a get out of jail pass to attend his wedding, but authorities say he never returned, nor did he make the wedding.
On Wednesday Guzman was given a four hour pass from the Merced County Jail so he could get married, said Merced County Sheriff’s Department spokesman deputy Tom MacKenzie. He was let out at 1 p.m. and was supposed to turn himself back into custody at 5 p.m. After failing to turn himself in, correctional officers learned that he also failed to show for his wedding, MacKenzie said.
His jilted bride told authorities she had no idea of his whereabouts.
Guzman was in custody for burglary with enhancements for prior convictions. The additional charge of escape will be added to Guzman’s record once he is located and re-arrested. Anyone with information on Guzman is asked to contact the Merced Sheriff’s Office at 385-7444.
