Hawks remain winless in league

RC skewers Delhi

Delhi’s Cynthia Magana struggles to find space to pass as a RC defender plays tight defense during the Knights victory Tuesday night.

The girls of Delhi High played the role of the Washington Generals to Ripon Christian’s Harlem Globetrotters Tuesday night as the Hawks (0-6 SL, 1-13 Overall) and Knights (6-0 SL, 12-4 Overall) competed in the sixth Southern League game of the season.

Entering the matchup on a six-game losing streak and averaging only 19.2 points per game, Delhi was faced with an insurmountable task — take down the defending league co-champions. In the end, the Hawks’ inexperience and lack of fundamentals led to a disproportionate 58-6 final for RC’s ninth straight win.

“The girls had fun and they were doing everything that they practiced. We already knew what the score was going to be. We were going to lose, but my girls went out there and had fun,” head coach Arcelia Areaga said. “The score means nothing to us, we’re just working together.”

Delhi scored its six points in the first quarter — four by way of Yaneli Reyes — and then failed to gain any more offensive traction after that. Frequent turnovers led to a slew of transition points for the Knights who entered the half up 36-6.

After scoring 20 first half points, RC’s Teagan Manus chipped in seven more in the second half — 27 points total — before turning over scoring duties to Ellen Blankers.

Though the final score was a lopsided one, Tuesday’s performance was not Delhi’s worse showing of the season, it was the second worse. But even with the loss, the Lady Hawks’ spirits didn’t seem dampened; an undoubted product of their ability to recognize their weaknesses of a small roster lacking experience.

“We’re working on all the skills, but these are tough games,” Areaga said. “They’re very positive and they’re learning a lot.”

Delhi continues its quest for a league win tomorrow on the road against Denair High.
