Road trip begins with loss for Stanislaus women

POSTED January 24, 2014 11:33 p.m.

The longest road trip in the California Collegiate Athletic Association started with a brutal result as the Stanislaus women again weren't able to recover from a poor start in the loss at Humboldt State Thursday night.
The Warriors started the game 0-for-13 from the field and two Lumberjacks scored 20-plus points as Cal State Stanislaus dropped a 97-63 decision inside Lumberjack Arena.
Megan Shields poured in 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Kersey Wilcox scored 21 to lead Humboldt State's mild-upset. HSU snapped a two-game skid to improve to 8-7 overall and 5-6 in the CCAA.
Cal State Stanislaus snapped a two-game winning streak and fell to 10-5 overall and 7-4 in conference play.
By the time the Warriors made their first basket — at 10:02 on a layup by Alysa Valentine — the Lumberjacks led 16-4. Stanislaus ended up 5-for-31 (16.1 percent) in the first half and HSU led 43-21 at intermission.
Humboldt State would lead by as many as 32 halfway through the second half on a layup by Wilcox at 11:26. HSU would extend that lead to 36 with 5:32 to play despite Stanislaus rebounding to shoot 50 percent in the second half.
For the night, the Lumberjacks made 55.4 percent of their attempts on their home court with Shields hitting on 10 of her 13 field goal tries.
Lauren Godde led the Warriors with 11 points while Riley Holladay and Briana Cotton each scored nine points. Ana Burch added eight and Nailah Davis scored seven with six rebounds to pace Stanislaus. Holladay also had six rebounds.
The long road trip — an eight-plus hour bus ride to Arcata on Wednesday — will continue tonight as the team travels south to Sonoma County before continuing to Southern California on Friday. The Warriors will take on Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday. In all, the Warriors will travel nearly 1,500 miles on the bus from Wednesday to early Sunday morning for these two conference games.
