Hughson toddler rescued from fiery crash

Mother dies at scene

POSTED January 29, 2014 6:24 p.m.

A 3-year-old Hughson boy was rescued from a vehicle collision mere moments before the truck he was in burst into flames and claimed the life of his mother.

The fatal traffic collision happened Tuesday afternoon on Albers Road.

The fatality was identified as Chandra Barnard, 29, of Hughson.

Barnard’s son, Jason Barnard, 3, sustained moderate injuries from the head-on collision.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision was Cesar Guzman, 23, of Keyes.

Barnard was driving a Chevrolet truck southbound on Albers Road at an estimated 50 mph, according to the California Highway Patrol.

For an unknown reason, Barnard allowed the vehicle to veer into the northbound lane, where it struck Guzman’s 2014 Ford truck head-on.

A witness to the crash, who was a nurse, ran to the Chevrolet and checked Barnard for a pulse. Finding none, the nurse pulled Jason from the fiery wreckage before it was completely engulfed in flames, the CHP reported.

Guzman suffered major injuries and was taken by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center.

Jason was taken to Doctors Medical Center by ambulance.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

In addition to Jason, Barnard was the mother to two girls. A fund to help with funeral expenses has been set up at Bank of the West under Chandra Barnard.
