For the past 34 years, Ashley Hart of Turlock Construction Company has been one of the community’s most loyal business contractors.

Following his love for carpentry and building, Hart established Turlock Construction Company in 1979. Hart’s interest in building a project from the ground up started at a young age, as he has been a contractor since the age of 21.

“I grew up here in Turlock, went to grammar school, junior high and high school here, and I always knew what I wanted to do,” said Hart. “I loved building things, and so I started working early.”

Although the construction industry has taken a hit over the years due to the recession, Hart says that his continued success — including being chosen the Turlock Journal 2013 Readers' Choice for construction business — has been the result of customer loyalty.

“I feel blessed to have made it through these hard times with the recession that we had,” said Hart. “With the help of our loyal customers and repeat business, I’ve been able to keep going through these hard economic times.”

Prior to the recession, Hart and his crew received several projects building custom homes. Although Hart says that they still receive custom home work from time to time, the economic downfall led to many customers seeking remodeling projects instead.

“One of the things that I’ve stayed active in and has been a good thing for me is remodeling,” said Hart. “We haven’t had the custom homes that we’ve dealt with through the years, so one of the things that have been a real strong suit for me the past three or four years is commercial and residential remodeling.”

Being raised in Turlock, Hart says that he has tried to keep Turlock Construction Company small to better serve his hometown and local community.

“Through the years, most of my work has been referral,” said Hart. “I’ve tried to stay small to give the best quality work possible. Most of my work has been in Turlock, and I generally try to stay within a six-mile radius. Not to say that I won’t go further for our customers. For example, I have existing customers that were from Turlock originally that I’ve gone out of town for. And sometimes I have customers that ask me to do some work on their cabins, so I’ll go and do that as well. I enjoy and prefer serving local customers.”

Hart currently has two crews working with him, in addition to his son, Scott Hart, who he hopes to one day pass the family business on to.

“He’s been a big part of my company as well, along with my key guys who have been with me for years,” said Hart. “He does estimating and running his chops as well. There’s nothing that I put him on that he’s not capable of doing. I’m going to be bringing him in as a partner, because one day I hope to retire and just work as a hobby.”

Turlock Construction Company continues to offer a variety of construction services, including custom home work and remodeling for residential and commercial buildings.

“I do a lot of different things, and that is what has kept me going along through this economy over the past five years. The variety of things that my tem and I are able to do have really allowed us to make it through the tough times,” said Hart. “I pride myself in giving the best quality work possible at a competitive price.”
