With 60 years of service to the Turlock community, Bilson’s Sport Shop celebrated its diamond anniversary by being named the best sporting goods store in the Turlock Journal 2013 Readers' Choice survey.

A Turlock staple at its current location since 1979, Bilson’s has managed to compete with its big- box competitors by offering a combination of high quality customer service and sport products while also being able to adapt to the shifting demand of its customer base.

“Service is everything for us; service and product,” co-owner Steve Moe said.

Since becoming co-owner alongside Brad Bilson in 1997, Moe has overseen the malleability of the business, first with the removal of bikes on the display floor, then with the implementation of local team apparel, and most recently with the growth of Bilson’s gun display.

“We carry all the team sports—football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, wrestling. That’s what we’re really into. Head to toe, shoes and all the team apparel and uniforms, we deal with a lot of high schools,” Moe said. “We enlarged or gun shop last year, too. We’ve always carried a lot of guns, but we enlarged our display area. The market’s constantly changing so we change along with the atmosphere.”

But there’s more than just business when it comes to Bilson’s. One look at the shop's back wall— lined with dozens of sponsored youth sport plaques— and there’s no doubt that Bilson’s is a community supporter interested in more than just sales.

“We have, probably, 500 plaques. We just can’t fit them all,” Moe said.

Bilson’s community commitment has been reciprocated with not only the 2013 Reader’s Choice award, but also with customers who return time and time again to equip their kids and themselves with quality and reasonably priced products.

“Some people like the smaller atmosphere where they can get helped. We’re more of a core sports store, so the people who are serious about sports and want to go to the next level for their kids, they usually come here,” Moe said. “We carry all the core products, anything you need, and if it’s any sport we have it.”

Bilson's is located at 201 Lander Ave., and open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.
