Borealis Wind Quintet set to perform

Renowned wood ensemble plans Turlock concert

The Borealis Wind Quintet will be performing in Turlock on Feb. 20.

POSTED February 6, 2014 2:57 p.m.

The Turlock Concert Association is bringing the Grammy-nominated Borealis Wind Quintet to town for a show that organizers describe as “a program of musical integrity and personal charisma.”

The five member woodwind group will take to the stage at the Turlock Community Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20.

Borealis Wind Quintet formed in 1976 when the members were at the Juilliard School of Music. The ensemble is made up of Katherine Fink (flute), Tamar Beach Wells (oboe), Kathryn Taylor (clarinet), Dan Culpepper (horn) and Wayne Hileman (bassoon). Individually, they have performed with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Andrea Bocelli, the New York City Ballet, Sting and “Phantom of the Opera.”

Borealis Wind Quintet set their place as one of the premier woodwind ensembles in 2006, when their CD “A La Carte” was nominated for a Grammy as Best Chamber Music. It marked only the second time a woodwind ensemble had been nominated in the category. Hileman explained to National Public Radio that woodwinds have a tough time competing in the category because classical string ensembles have “volumes of great masterpieces” to perform.

The ensemble is noted for engaging programming drawn from classic, modern and opera repertoire, as well as commissioned pieces.

Single tickets for this event are $25 general admission and  $15 for students. Season subscription includes reciprocal tickets at eight affiliated associations in the region. For tickets or further information, call Linda Posegate at 668-1456 or Eric Julien 667-5874 or visit www.turlockconcert.org
