In front of the largest home crowd of the year, the Warriors' women's basketball team survived foul trouble to sweep the season series against Cal State San Bernardino in a 72-63 victory Friday night.
Briana Cotton had 21 points to lead all players as Cal State Stanislaus ended a four-game losing streak with a much-needed home win in front of a loud homecoming crowd of nearly 900 fans. The Warriors improved to 11-8 overall and 8-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Stanislaus also swept the Coyotes (4-14, 3-12 CCAA) in the season series for the first time since the 2002-03 season.
Saturday night, the Warriors not only will be looking to continue the streak but pick up a program milestone with the 500th victory.
Against the Coyote Friday night, the Warriors didn't shoot particularly well, especially in the first half when they managed just 9 of 32 for 28.1 percent. The low percentage, along with 15 fouls called allowed CSUSB to stay in the game to forge a 33-33 tie score at the half.
For the Warriors, Jasmine Washington picked up three in the first seven-plus minutes of the game and Lauren Godde also had three fouls in the first half after scoring 11 points. Godde picked up her fourth just 23 seconds into the second half.
Stanislaus got some separation in the scoring in the second half with a 14-2 run to get its first double-digit lead at 9:56 to play. CSUSB would not get back into the game until inside the 3-minute mark. An Alexcia Mack jumper at 3:01 pulled the Coyotes within seven, 66-59.
The Warriors retained control with jumpers by Riley Holladay and Jasmine Washington to round out the win. Holladay grabbed eight rebounds and Godde and Washington each finished with 11 points.
