No charges filed in Winton shooting that claimed life of Turlock man

POSTED February 13, 2014 1:42 p.m.

The Merced County District Attorney’s Office has decided to not file criminal charges against a Winton family implicated in the death of a Turlock man.

The district attorney’s office said there was a lack of sufficient evidence at this time to pursue charges related to the death of Andy Coronado Jr., 26, of Turlock.

Coronado was shot Jan. 13 outside a home in the 6600 block of Golden Bobcat Court in Winton.

According to the Merced County Sheriff’s Department, Coronado and his father, Andy Coronado Sr., 62, were called to the Winton residence by a family member to help intervene in an ongoing squabble with Andrez Villa, 32, and Asencion Villa, 61.

The verbal argument escalated into a physical fight, which turned into a gun fight when the two Villa men pulled out their firearms and opened fire.

Both Coronados were shot, along with a third man. They were all taken to area hospitals, where Andy Coronado died from his injuries.

Andrez Villa suffered a broken leg in the melee and Asencion Villa sustained a skull fracture.

The Villas told investigators the Coronados entered their home and started fighting and that they fired their guns in self –defense.

Investigators have had little cooperation from the witnesses and those directly involved in the shooting, including the victim’s father.

The district attorney’s office said charges could be filed in the future if new evidence comes to light.
