Sheriff’s investigate two separate fatalities of local men

POSTED February 25, 2014 3:58 p.m.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the gunshot deaths of two local men in the county.

One death has been classified as a homicide, while the circumstances of the other remains ambiguous.

The deaths of the Turlock man and the Delhi man do not appear linked.

The first investigation was launched Feb. 19, when three individuals happened upon a deceased man at the Horseshow Recreation area in Oakdale.

The deceased has been identified by the sheriff’s department as Juan Jose Calvillo, 40, of Turlock. Calvillo was known to previously reside in the Oakdale area.

Calvillo died from a fatal gunshot wound, according to the sheriff’s department, but it is not yet know if it was self-inflicted or from another party. The shooting remains under investigation.

The body was found around 4:30 p.m. Feb. 19 by three people on their way to a fishing spot. According to the sheriff’s department, the three people did not know the man and it was apparent he was already dead.

Calvillo was listed as a missing person earlier last week after he did not show up for a planned church activity.

The sheriff’s department did not release the information about the discovery of the body until Monday night, five days after it was made. The department gave no reason for the delay and provided no further details.

The second death the sheriff’s department is investigating is that of Oscar Nunez, 36, of Delhi.

Nunez was shot to death Sunday night in a high crime are of Modesto.

Deputies were dispatched to the 300 block of Olivero Road around 5 p.m. for reports of gunfire.

Upon their arrival, the deputies found Nunez in a small field between two residential structures. Nunez had sustained at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses said gunshots could be heard about 45 minutes to an hour before deputies were called.

Olivero Road lies in an unincorporated area between Crows Landing Road and Hatch Road and has a consistently high rate of crime. Nunez was known to frequent the area, according to the police department.

No arrests in Nunez’s murder have been made.

The sheriff’s department is asking for information on either case. Anyone with information on the death of Calvillo should call Detective David Hickman at 525-7042. Anyone with information on the murder of Nunez is asked to call Detective Lloyd MacKinnon at 525-7032.
