Death at Turlock rest stop under investigation

POSTED March 4, 2014 5:56 p.m.

The Stanislaus County is now officially investigating the death of a woman found at a Turlock rest stop after another law enforcement agency declined the case.

The woman found at the rest stop has been identified as Christina Cardoza, 41, of Merced. Cardoza previously resided in Turlock, Hilmar, and Modesto.

Cardoza was found around 8 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Enoch Christoffersen rest stop area on northbound Highway 99. Emergency personnel responded to the scene and gave her aid, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stanislaus County Sheriff’s spokesman Keith Rakoncza said Cardoza sustained an injury earlier that day near Campbell Boulevard and Winton Parkway in Livingston.

The case was handed to the Livingston Police Department initially, but the department stated there was no evidence that the incident preceding her death occurred in their jurisdiction, so the case was sent back to the sheriff’s department.

The online crime reporting system utilized by the Livingston Police Department showed no reported incident in that area for that day.

The cause of death is still pending the autopsy and toxicology results, which can take four to six weeks, Rakoncza said.

The death has been deemed suspicious.

Anyone with information related to Cardoza’s death is asked to contact Detective David Hickman at 525-7042.
