Sixth grade teacher Jamie Garner of Walnut Elementary missed school this week because she was busy shaking President Barack Obama’s hand in Washington, D.C.

Garner is one of two teachers from California, and 102 math and science teachers across the nation, recognized for her teaching talent as a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching. Garner and her fellow recipients received their award and recognition from the President in the nation’s capital after participating in several celebratory and education events including professional development workshops and seminars about the future of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, or STEM, education in America.

“Becoming a PAEMST awardee means that my voice as a teacher can be heard in a way it never was before. I now have the platform to promote the changes in STEM education that my colleagues and I dream about in the lunchroom and at the copy machine each day. I now have the opportunity to be the catalyst for change in education today,” said Garner.

Garner’s success has awarded her more than acclaim as she will receive $10,000 furnished by the National Science Foundation to be used at her discretion. Prior to the PAEMST award, Garner, who has taught at Walnut Elementary for seven years, was named the 2013 Stanislaus County Teacher of the Year for the 4th-6th grade division in May.

"Jamie Garner has made Turlock Unified School District proud to have Mrs. Garner as an educator. Her recognition has put the community of Turlock on the map nationally for its educational programs," said TUSD Superintendent Dr. Sonny DaMarto.
