Mayor Lazar running for third term

John Lazar will seek a third term as Turlock's mayor.

POSTED March 14, 2014 10:38 p.m.

For the past eight years, Mayor John Lazar has been dedicated to serving the community of Turlock. With his second term as mayor ending this year, Lazar has decided to seek reelection, hoping to continue his efforts to strengthen the city for another four years.

Although the Mayor did not originally anticipate running for a third term, Lazar says that his decision was changed after being encouraged by many to seek reelection.

“I honestly didn’t see myself running for a third term, but I’ve recently been encouraged by my peers, family, friends and members of the community to seek another term so that I can continue some of my efforts in job creation,” said Lazar. “Over the recent years we’ve been working towards several areas of economic recovery, including the development of the Mayor’s Economic Task Force, the continued revival of Downtown Turlock, and an overall re-vibrancy of Turlock’s job development. As Mayor, I want to continue this work.”

With a passion for serving the community, Lazar says he has always enjoyed public service and making a contribution toward better government in Turlock. In addition to several economic development efforts, Lazar hopes to continue fostering the relationship between the City of Turlock and California State University, Stanislaus.

“I also want to continue building that relationship with CSU Stanislaus and President Joseph Sheley, and see those efforts come to fruition,” said Lazar. “We’ve developed a wonderful relationship since he came on board at the university, which has been mutually beneficial for us.”

Working alongside city staff and fellow council members has also been a highlight for Lazar, as he noted their hard work in various areas impacting the city.

“We have a great working council and there are a lot of good things coming as a result of our many years focusing on the General Plan update and improvements to public safety,” said Lazar. “Over the next year we’ll be working towards increased roadway improvements, as we work with the community and the potential countywide tax measure on the November ballot. In terms of staff, we have very competent and wonderful people who are not afraid to step out and make a recommendation to the City Council. Right now, all the moving parts are working in a forward direction, and I enjoy being a part of it and working for my community.”

Lazar filed his notice of intent to seek reelection with the Stanislaus County Clerk-Recorder’s Office last week, securing his place on the November ballot for Turlock Mayor. Also up for reelection in 2014 are Council members Bill DeHart and Forrest White. Councilwoman Amy Bublak’s seat might also become open, should she be elected as County Assessor in the 2014 election.
