Less than one month after he capped his senior year at Turlock High with a 7th place finish at the State Tournament, Albino Orozco again found himself on the mat, only this time he was competing against the best wrestlers the nation, not just California, had to offer.

Orozco traveled to Virginia Beach last week for the 25th Annual NHSCA High School Wrestling Championships where he competed in the senior division at 160-pounds—a 10 pound drop from his high school weight. In his first appearance at the national tournament, Orozco finished 2-2 overall.

“He didn’t stop working out. As soon as he qualified for the tournament, he immediately wanted to go,” Orozco’s high school coach Mike Contreras said. “We wanted him to be All-American, but 2-2 and getting that national exposure is a good thing. I’m happy he had the opportunity to compete.”

Orozco kicked off his appearance at the three-day tournament with back-to-back wins over Alan Delessandro of Tennessee and Saconney Hill of North Carolina. The Turlocker’s third match didn’t follow the same thread, however, as he fell short against Grayson Davis of Ohio to end his first day of competition.

Orozco entered day two of competition pitted against Kyle Jolas of Indiana but ultimately lost, ending his run at the national tournament.

Now, Orozco is looking towards club season with Turlock while also trying to secure a home after high school at the collegiate level.

“He definitely wants to continue wrestling,” Contreras said. “He’s going to end up in college, I just don’t know where yet.”
