Hilmar’s Landon Azevedo tops out in Pitman Invitational

POSTED April 1, 2014 7:47 p.m.

Out of 16 schools and over 80 golfers at Monday’s Pitman Invitational, Hilmar High’s Landon Azevedo was the best after finishing the day atop with a score of 73, five strokes ahead of second place Brandon Gordian of Buhach Colony.

With the event set at the Diablo Grande Ranch Course, many golfers saw their day not end as successful as Azevedo, who made it look easy—again.

“I expect Landon to win every tournament he plays in. He has a solid game,” Hilmar head coach Ty Pettigrew said. “Landon has the ability to shoot low scores and it’s only a matter of time before he has tournaments where he finishes five or six under par.”

Despite Azevedo’s commanding day, Hilmar only managed to place 11th overall as a team, but coach Pettigrew feels his top golfer can only control so much.

“Sometimes in golf it is difficult to know how the rest of the field is doing, so all he can control is playing his best,” Pettigrew added. “Hopefully, that will take place once we get into the playoffs.”

Turlock finished fourth as a team after scoring a 348, with Pitman, the hosts, took fifth with a 357.
