Delhi High’s softball team is riding a two-game win streak in which its girls have not allowed a run, setting up a must win matchup against Waterford High today that is likely to shape the final leg of the race for this season’s Southern Athletic League title.

The Hawks started the week with a 2-0 win over Le Grand High on Monday, which was followed with a 12-0 win over Denair High on Wednesday. Ace pitcher Alyssa Stockton was a major component in both victories with 13 strikeouts recorded against Le Grand and another 17 strikeouts recorded against Denair, amounting to 30 strikeouts in a three-day span.

“The two games that we’ve lost, against Mariposa County, they’ve been because of errors. We had no errors against Le Grand and there were no errors against Denair,” Delhi head coach Tami Tella said.

On Wednesday, Delhi hit the Coyotes with a one-two punch of stingy defense and opportunistic batting. Cynthia Aguilera led the way from the plate with four RBI, followed by Bianca Nunez with three RBI, and Briana Lopez and Diamond Orozco, who scored two RBI each.

“The last few games I’ve been happy with our bats. The girls need to realize we’re not going to always get that perfect pitch down the middle of the plate, so we’ve been practicing a lot on the side of the plate. It really showed against Denair,” Tella said.

Wednesday’s win kept the Hawks in the top tier of the SAL standings, officially second behind Mariposa County and Waterford, though only because they are a game behind schedule.

Delhi will host Waterford in today’s game where a win will keep its championship dreams afloat.

“Like I said in the beginning of the season, it’s going to come down to the last game. We all have two losses, so it’s going to come down to the last game,” Tella said. “It’s a big game; it’s a must win. We need to execute.”
