POSTED April 22, 2014 2:31 p.m.

For the 10th straight year, the Modesto Junior College football staff will offer its annual Football Coaches Clinic from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The clinic will cover defensive, offensive and special teams tactics and strategies as told by a handful of local head coaches from the area speaking about all three sides of football, with MJC's football head coach Sam Young concluding the day.

"It's an annual thing. An opportunity for coaches to get together and share some information, and a great opportunity for youth coaches to get info on football, thoughts and plays from different playing levels," Young said.

This event will be held in the MJC Gymnasium on the East Campus, located across from the Agricultural Complex on Coldwell Avenue.

Each speaker, or coach, will have a 45 minute period to talk about their side of the ball, along with a 15 minute period for questions to be answered.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. with MJC assistant and running backs coach Red Butler, who will discuss football conditioning and the importance of tactics. This will be followed with JD Willis, St. Mary's offensive line coach, speaking about the offensive line and their importance in a game.

Billy Hyla of recent state champions Central Catholic High, will be the event's third spokesman and will discuss defensive play, followed by coach Young's conclusion about his MJC offense.

"Everyone is welcome. It's an opportunity for all coaches to get questions answered and I always open it up for questions at the end. Obviously, we have the presentations, it's a great chance to get yourself first in strategy and tactics of the game," said Young.

Since its first year, the clinic has drawn 40 to 50 attendants and has remained consistent.

"[I'm] looking forward to having a good turnout this year as well. You seem to have the same people come back year after year, it's no accident, these guys are looking to find the latest trends, what they are and to get more educated on the game and that's one of our missions as a community college to help the larger community in terms of playing the sport of football," Young said.

Cost of the clinic is $30 per individual and 100 for a full staff that includes four or more.

Registration is available online at or by phoning 575-6063. Registration can also be processed with cash, check or credit card by visiting MJC Community Education in Morris Building 204 on East Campus, 435 College Ave., Modesto.
