The California State Assembly and Senate both commemorated the 99th anniversary of the Armenian genocide by adopting separate Genocide Recognition Resolutions on April 7.

"99 years ago, 1.5 million men, women and children were massacred at the hands of the Ottoman, Turkish Empire. California has the great fortune of being home to many people of Armenian descent including former Governor George Deukmejian. In fact, in my district, the city of Fresno is home to one of the largest Armenian communities in the entire United States. The genocide infected in the people of Armenia is remembered and relived by my constituents every single day. They mourn for those who were murdered and for those still oppressed today. Today, for the first time in many years, we have the makings of another tragedy for the people of that region. As we acknowledge and commemorate the 99th and anniversary of the Armenian genocide today. We as a nation should remember that what was wrong 99 years ago is still wrong today," said Senator Tom Berryhill from the Senate Floor.

Armenian Church clergy and community members, including Rev. Fr. Asoghig Jamgotchian, pastor of St. James Armenian Church in Sacramento, Rev. Fr. Mesrop Ash, pastor of St. John Armenian Church in San Francisco, and Deacon Daniel Aydenian of Turlock's Holy Cross Church and the Primate’s representative in Sacramento, represented the Primate at the State Capitol. Two representatives of the St. James Armenian Church Parish Council and representatives of the Armenian community of Turlock were also in attendance.

Diocesan representatives met with several elected officials to thank them for their support.
