Double homicide in Dos Palos

POSTED January 8, 2010 11:21 p.m.
A 21-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy were the victims in a double homicide discovered Tuesday morning in Dos Palos, the Merced County Sheriff’s Department reported.
The victims were identified by the sheriff’s department as 21-year-old Juan Avalos and 16-year-old Lionel Medina, both of Dos Palos. Both had been shot multiple times, said sheriff spokesman Deputy Ed Katen.
The two victims were gunned down inside a detached garage at a residence in the 1900 block of Highway 33, just north of Dos Palos, Katen said.
Merced County Sheriff Mark Pazin described the shooting as a “cowardly and despicable crime.”
According to the family members who were inside the residence, they heard at least two shots around 1 a.m. Tuesday. When the two victims did not respond to the family’s calls, a relative went out looking for them and found them shot inside the garage, Katen said.
The two were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe the shooting was not a random act and that the two victims were targeted by one or more killers, who likely walked up on the victims in the garage, Katen said.
It’s unknown if the shooting is gang-related.
The deaths marked the first and second homicides for the Merced County Sheriff’s Department in 2010.
