Pitman's Moitoso makes it to round two

Local players out early in CCC Singles

Pitman's Jeremy Moitoso returns a ball in Tuesday's CCC Singles Tournament, held at Turlock High.

POSTED April 29, 2014 8:17 p.m.

Turlock High hosted the Central California Conference Singles Tournament for the first time on Tuesday, however, the Bulldog  competitors didn't fare too well in the home tourney.

Along with Turlock's Ryan Asai, Johnny Brenda and Nick Vardeh, Pitman High had two competitors in the tournament in  Jeremy Moitoso and Devan Jantz.

Unfortunately, none of the local tennis players got past the second round, with the top two players in the CCC, Rex Cabrea of Merced and Cesar Nava of Golden Valley, handling their opponents and heading into the finale tomorrow.

“All three of our guys did well, they won their first round matchup and they played well. Unfortunately, they are less experienced and had to play some more experienced kids,” Turlock head coach Juan Alaniz said. “Kids did great overall. I am very pleased; we did what I expected the guys to do.”

With a young squad in Turlock’s roster, the future looks brighter for the Bulldogs who saw all three of their representatives move past the first round and into the quarterfinal matches but their lack of maturity plagued them as they each faced off against the top three players in the CCC.

Nava, Cabrea and Thomas Becker, who was ranked third, each handed the Bulldogs a defeat in straight sets.

For the Pride, Jantz got taken out in the first round against Becker, who took him down 6-3 and 6-3. Moitoso got past the opening round after defeating Buhach Colony’s Tony Vang, 6-4 and 6-1, but then fell to Adrian Garcia of Golden Valley in the second round after three, 6-2, 2-6 and 6-3.

The CCC doubles tournament will also be held at Turlock High, starting at 9 a.m. Thursday.
