Good Samaritans rescue man from fire

Fire fighters battle a house fire on Tornell Avenue that was the scene of a rescue by two unknown men.

POSTED May 27, 2014 5:34 p.m.

Two men rescued a wheelchair-bound man from his burning home Tuesday afternoon in Turlock.

The men arrived just in time to save the 91-year-old man, and just as quickly they departed the scene with their identities a mystery to the stunned neighbors.

“They were like the white knights coming in to save the day,” said neighbor David Seymour.

The fire was reported around 4 p.m. Tuesday in the 1000 block of Tornell Avenue.

Seymour, who lives across the street from the home, said residents were alerted to the fire when they heard the home’s alarm start “chirping.”

Flames could be seen coming from the attic and residents were trying to figure out a way into the locked home when the two Good Samaritans pulled up to the scene.

The two men rushed into the backyard and moments later came out through the front door with the homeowner in his wheelchair, Seymour said.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined as of this time and no estimate on the damage was available. A total of three fire engines responded to the scene, along with American Medical Response, Turlock Police Department, Turlock Irrigation Department, and Pacific Gas and Electric.

No injuries were reported at the scene.
