UC Merced professor receives national award

POSTED January 16, 2010 12:14 a.m.
UC Merced Cognitive Science professor Micheal Spivey has been named the 2010 recipient of the prestigious William Procter Prize for Scientific Achievement.
Spivey received the national award, which has gone to such scholars as Benoit Mandelbrot and Jane Goodall in past years, for studies using eye-tracking and reach-tracking equipment that examine how humans perceive and respond to what they see and hear. Spivey’s research has revolutionized human understanding of the brain, showing that different brain regions simultaneously communicate with each other in what’s called a continuous loop.
Spivey has previously received two Merrill Presidential Scholars Outstanding Educator awards from Cornell University, in addition to the UC Merced Academic Senate Award for Distinction in Research.
