Mother charged with toddler’s drowning

POSTED January 16, 2010 12:32 a.m.
The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department arrested a 23-year-old woman Thursday night on the suspicion that she killed her 3-year-old daughter.
Around 6 p.m. Thursday sheriff deputies were dispatched to a home in the 400 block of Thrush Drive in Patterson to assist medical personnel on a report of a child who had drowned in a bathtub.
Emergency personnel performed CPR on the unresponsive child until she was transported by air ambulance to Doctors Medical Center. The child, identified by the sheriff’s department as Alexandrea Bigham, 3, was pronounced dead by medical staff at 9:50 p.m.
Deputies also found the mother, 23-year-old Jennifer Bigham of Castro Valley, at the house with multiple stab wounds that according to the sheriff’s department were self-inflicted and non-life threatening.
“After investigating throughout the night detectives determined the drowning of the child was an intentional act by the victim’s mother,” sheriff Deputy Andrew Winter stated in a press release.
Jennifer Bigham was treated by medical personnel and then was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of murder and child abuse resulting in death.
Both mother and daughter are from the Hayward area and were in Patterson visiting family, Winter said.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Detective Ken Hedrick at 525-7083.
