History of Business: When Katie Hansen became a mother she soon realized how costly it can be to keep her growing little ones clothed. Seven years ago, she turned her personal parenting experiences into a business opportunity and opened Little Ones, a new and gently used children's store in Modesto.

Her store grew into a larger space and client base, with many repeat customers hailing from Turlock. After many requests, Hansen decided to expand to a second shop in the Turlock area in October 2013.

"I was surprised at the overall support of the community, and I'm already seeing that in Turlock. They're excited that we're there. It's not only a place to shop, but a place to have good mommy conversations," said Hansen.

Business Specialty: From the beginning Hansen knew she wanted to focus on two ideas: excellent customer service and a commitment to safety.

"I was in a moms club and they kept telling me that they'd shop at stores like ours but not get the customer service. We pride ourselves on helping moms get good quality stuff that is safe and at a good price," she said.

"We're really big on safety. You can go to any garage sale or online site, but going to our store you know you're getting something safe. We're always double checking, cross checking...I wouldn't sell something that I wouldn't put my own child in," Hansen added.

Little Ones offers a rotating selection of gently used clothing, toys and baby equipment. The store also has maternity clothing something "not easily found used," according to Hansen.

Both locations also sell some new items such as a series of wooden toys from Melissa & Doug, a few baby carriers and boutique items like hair bows and headbands.

The store also buys used equipment and toys and clothing. Potential sellers can bring items into the store and, depending on the condition and need of the item, receive store credit or cash. For clothing items, Little Ones gives store credit only. Appointments are encouraged for selling items, but not required.
