1. Should we take showers instead of baths? Should we use with our garbage disposal? Should we use an automatic dishwasher instead of doing dishes by hand?

Answer: Usually showers require less water than baths, comparing full-tub baths with short showers. Garbage disposals require water, but the bigger problem is transporting the garbage through the wastewater system, which uses even more. Dishwashers actually don’t use a large amount of water per cycle, just be sure to only run full loads rather than just a few items.

 2. What should I do if my neighbors, the local church, school, golf course, etc., are violating water conservation policies and/or wasting water?

Answer: Call the City of Turlock Municipal Services Department at (209) 668-5590 or report offence online via the City’s website at www.cityofturlock.org (see Municipal Services Department). It will prompt a response from the City’s Water Conservationist will result in the negligent user being contacted.

4. How much rain does California need to reverse the drought?

Answer: The amount of rainfall needed is dependent on how much of that rainfall translates into runoff. Because the state has a growing precipitation deficit, any water that California gets is essentially being absorbed by the land. To reverse the drought, the state would need enough rainfall so that it causes runoff into the reservoirs and then flows into the water supply line.

Water Conservation Tip #13

WATER RECREATION FOR CHILDREN

Create an awareness of the need for water conservation among your children. Avoid purchasing recreational water toys that require a constant stream of water. If you do allow children to play in the sprinklers to cool off, make sure it's only during your water days and time so they can have fun and water the yard at the same time.
