Mother, boyfriend accused of killing 2-year old

Kalena Marie Olson

POSTED August 18, 2014 5:33 p.m.

A Delhi mother, along with her boyfriend, have been arrested on allegations they caused the death of her 2-year-old daughter by asphyxiation.

Kalena Marie Olson, 22, of Delhi and Sergio Angel Zamora, 23, of Delhi are each facing charges of homicide for the death of 2-year-old Hennessy Fagin on April 21. Merced County Sheriff’s detectives stated the toddler died from injuries she had sustained over an ongoing period of physical abuse and that her 3-year-old sister had suffered the same abuse.

Around 12:30 a.m. April 21, sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a home in the 9600 block of Hillside Drive in Hilmar for a report of deceased child, said sheriff spokesman Deputy Delray Shelton.

Merced County Pathologist Dr. Mark A. Super deemed the cause of death as sudden unexplained death that was likely subsequent to asphyxia. Super stated the child’s sudden death “paints a picture of a battered child, who’s brain was deprived of oxygen.” The injuries were similar to those of suffocation.

Shelton said both children had similar injuries, but that the 2-year-old’s proved fatal.

Early on into the investigation detectives charged Olson with felony child abuse and booked her into the Merced County Jail. A similar warrant was issued for Zamora, but he could not be located, Shelton said. Olson was later released without charges officially being filed as the investigation continued.

The arrest warrants for the pair were issued recently after the pathology testing was completed.

The Turlock Police Department had developed information that Zamora and Olson were at a home in the 900 block of South Avenue. At 3:51 p.m. Saturday officers surrounded the home and ordered the pair to come out.

Zamora fled the house on foot at 4:13 p.m. but was apprehended a short distance away after a brief chase.

About 10 minutes later Olson came out of the home with her hands up and was taken into custody.

Both Zamora and Olson have been booked into the Stanislaus County Jail. The Merced County Sheriff’s Department is seeking extradition and once they are back in Merced County they will be charged with homicide and felony child abuse.

Both are being held on bails of $100 million each.

The 3-year-old was put into the care of Child Protective Services.

The biological father of the 3-year-old does not play an active role in her life and sees her infrequently, Shelton said.
